Developing products together so that they are easier to manufacture and also have innovative features is the way to go.
Collaboration is better than confrontation and hitting the supplier over the head with a 4x2 switches the supplier off.
Carry on with that approach and you will find most suppliers will walk away and no longer deal with you.
Much better to work solutions together and understand one anothers position lay the cards out on the table and develop a joint plan.
The use of Value Engineering and design for manufacture has moved the relationship in to the strategic area.

It is essential to establish positive open and honest working relationships with suppliers, this can only occur when both parties commit to a relevent and honest communication process. SRM enables this process to be discussed and the right way to manage a relationship be established at the onset. Where cost and value sit alongside quality and competative advantage, it is critical that client businesses invest time in managing their supplier relationships to get the best results for both parties.
